“I am so happy to be a part of Sax School again and thrilled to find it is even bigger and better than I was expecting.”
Returning Sax School member Steph shares her thoughts on how Sax School has grown.
Starting out on Sax
Stephanie first joined Sax School about 6 years ago. “I had been playing flute since high school, but had always wanted to learn sax. Initially, I started learning by myself with the Tune a Day and then the Rubank books, but once I joined Sax School it became so much more fun”, she recalls. ”I loved having so many great songs to learn and technique tips to work on. It was exciting to see what new tune Nigel would present each week.”

How Sax School has Grown
After a couple of years, Steph had to step away from Sax School for a while. But late last year, Stephanie was able to rejoin and was immediately impressed how much Sax School has grown and evolved.
Sax School Pro
Steph has seen a big change in Sax School PRO. “As soon as I logged in to Sax School after I rejoined, I could see so much new content – and I mean new in the last couple of weeks, never mind all the stuff from the last couple of years. I was like a kid in a candy store. As I expected, there are lots of new music and technique lessons but also so much more.”
Masterclasses
Steph says “As I started to look around the members website, I found all these masterclasses from amazing world class players in different genres of music and spotlight sessions where students submitted videos of their playing for direct feedback from Nigel and his team of tutors.”
The Monthly Challenge
Steph says “The Monthly Challenge feature was also new to me – loads of really useful practical information to help you grow as a player, each month with a different topic. Recent ones range from blues to ska, funk to bebop. And of course, there was a Christmas challenge, culminating in a virtual concert of student submitted videos which was both entertaining and inspiring.”
“I can see that there are so many great Monthly Challenges that I have missed. I would like to explore some of these older sessions, even though it won’t be quite the same as working on each new one with everyone else. Then again, there’s so much other stuff in Sax School that I want to work on too. I need more time!”
“The January challenge is all about practicing more effectively – that might just help me to use my practice time wisely, so that I can use all these resources to make good progress with my playing as well as having fun.”

Blues Mastery
Steph says “I was so excited to see that all of the resources for the Blues Mastery course are now included in the Sax School Pro membership. This was a premium course when I was part of Sax School before, and I could not justify the extra expense to join that too at the time. Now I have started very slowly working through the materials from this in- depth course, and suddenly concepts around improvising that seemed to be so alien to me before are starting to make sense.”
The Horn Section Workout
Steph says “This course was also running separately for additional cost when I was a member a few years ago. But it’s now included in your PRO membership. I am really enjoying working on this right now. It is so much fun to learn how to play with a great horn section in all different styles, especially now when my regular bands are all closed down. It is great to try out all of the different parts in the section too – I love to play my bari as well as the lead parts.”
Sax School LITE
Steph says “Sax School LITE has been created as a separate product during the time I was away from Sax School. Many lessons from Sax School Pro are included and organised into nine difficulty levels.”
“I love structured practice, so even though I have been learning for over 7 years now, I decided to start at the very beginning. Each level has warmups, songs, improvising, technique lessons and scales. I feel I have benefited tremendously from working through the levels from the very start. Working on some very easy songs gave me the chance to focus more on my sound. The beginner improvisation lessons were just what I needed too. The lessons start very simply from the absolute basics and have made me feel I can actually learn to do this! I felt on top of the world the first time I played a tune, complete with the improvising sections.”

Tutor Team
Steph says “Nigel now has this amazing team of tutors who bring their experience as professional players and educators to support members, share their knowledge and provide feedback. Just recently I discovered another great feature – the Chat function where you can ask any questions to the Sax School team.”
“Last month, I was able to borrow a tenor. I loved working on this new instrument, except my G & G# (with the octave key on) had a tendency to squawk horribly and I could not figure out what to do. I asked for help through the Chat and within a couple of hours I had some really useful suggestions of how to try to fix the problem. The suggestions came from no less than Freddy Vigdor of the Average White Band, one of the amazing Sax School tutors. It is really wonderful to have easy access to a tutor team full of such great players and educators.”
