A lot of teachers will tell you that you should learn jazz transcriptions as a saxophone player, but most wont really explain why it’s important.
I’m a huge fan of transcriptions. They have been a bit part of my learning ever since before I even knew how to play jazz, and they continue to be up to today.
This week I have been transcribing a solo from the album Nancy Wilson with Cannonball Adderley. It’s a beautiful album.
I’ve been working through Cannonball’s solo over the track “The Old Country”, which is a cool bluesy tune. It’s only a short solo, but it is packed with iconic “Cannonball” lines that I have been checking out. He is one of my favourite alto players.
In this lesson I share with you why transcriptions can help you to fast track your tone development and how to use them effectively in your practice.
