I’m excited to try these Gary Sugal 3D printed mouthpieces.
I’ve heard a lot about Sugal 3D printed mouthpieces and they are used by some big name players like Michael Brecker, Kirk Whalum, Jerry Bergonzi, Dave Liebman.
Gary sent me a bunch of different models to try. The two I really like are the MB1 Turbo and the KW1 Turbo.
The Test
In this comparison I’m going to be playing the pieces I used in my pro tenor shootout videos.
- Ben Webster – I Got it Bad
- Wilton Felder Street Life solo
- Sam Butera – Buona Sera solo
- Rimsky-Korsakov – Flight of the Bumblebee
Watch the video below – let me know in a comment which sound you prefer.
The KW1 is one of the darkest mouthpiece Gary makes. Initially I was really excited about playing this one.
But actually the more I played it, the more I liked the MB1 Turbo. It feels familiar, like a metal mouthpiece. The sound has an edge to it that I really like. This mouthpiece is great if you need to play in lots of different styles, like I do for Sax School.
So if I was looking for something to replace my Theo Wanne mouthpiece, this would be a contender because it’s so versatile.
And because these are 3D printed, they are durable and replaceable. I think they’re great!
Check out Gary’s other mouthpieces on his website. He also sent me the MBII and the Yeti which is super-bright, and some really interesting carbon fiber mouthpieces.
