I filmed a masterclass with commercial saxophone legend Michael Lington for Sax School where he shared loads of tips and advice about how he maintains his amazing tone and technique, plus the way he got started in the music business. Amazing stuff.
This session was part of the “Guest Session” series for Sax School. Check out my other conversations with Jeff Kashiwa, GRP Star Nelson Rangell and the incredible UK sax player Nigel Hitchcock.
In this session with Michael Lington…
During our conversation, we discussed how Michael first got inspiration from other players and how he went about transcribing his favourite solos.
Was it writing them out, or learning by ear?
It turns out Michael is a huge advocate for learning all music by ear. For him it is the best way to CONNECT with the music.
Michael also shared how he uses this same approach when learning music with his band and performing. “Without music in front of me I can connect more with the musicians and the audience” says Michael.
Great tips!
