At Sax School Online, we love hearing the stories of our members—how they found their way to the saxophone and the journey they’re embarking on.
In a recent welcome party livestream, we were lucky to meet some of our new students, each bringing their unique background, aspirations, and challenges. Their experiences are inspiring and showcase how music connects us all.

Finding Music on the Road
Thomas, a truck driver, shared his story of picking up the saxophone over the Christmas period.
“I decided I wanted to try a new skill during my free time”
Despite his busy schedule, Thomas practices at least 30 minutes every evening, often carrying his saxophone with him in his truck. His dedication is remarkable, and he’s already learned the notes from C to B-flat. With encouragement from our team, he’s exploring the Starter Pathway to get into playing songs—a strategy that’s both fun and effective for improving technique.
Returning to a Passion
David, a lifelong musician who previously played piano and keyboard, recently started learning the saxophone on a Yamaha Alto he purchased during a Black Friday sale.
“I’ve always wanted to play the sax, but the idea of reading music and transposing is a new challenge for me”
Yet, his musical background is helping him progress quickly, and he’s diving into easy songs to build his confidence and technical skills.
Never Too Late to Start
Hilary, at 71, has been playing for two years and is determined to master the basics.
“I’ve never found anything so difficult in my life,” she shared with a laugh.
She’s tackling tonguing and breathing with a renewed focus, using resources like our Starter Songs Collection. Her goal? To confidently play at family parties—a dream she’s steadily working toward.
From Gigging to Refinement
Tom, a seasoned performer in tribute bands, joined Sax School Online to refine his craft. Working with our tutor Fred on iconic songs like Pick Up the Pieces, Tom is discovering the power of structured lessons.
“I’ve never used a metronome before, but now I’m realizing how much I can improve my rhythm”
Even experienced players find new ways to grow through Sax School.
The Science of Sound
Ruth, a scientist, brings her love of understanding processes to her saxophone practice. She’s working on tone and breath control with the goal of playing Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel.
“Technique Tuesday has been invaluable for understanding the ‘why’ behind everything,”
Takeaways for Every Beginner
Whether you’re picking up a saxophone for the first time or returning after a break, the stories of our members show that persistence and the right resources make all the difference. Start with simple songs, build a consistent practice routine, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
As Hilary said:
“It’s all about going back to basics and working through it step by step.”
