The Rode NT1A Microphone
I’ve been using the Rode NT1A for years to record the hundreds of videos I make for Sax School . It’s a great all rounder condenser mic, and costs around £160 to £200.
The AKG C414 XLS Microphone
I’ve recently changed to the AKG C414 XLS microphone. It’s been around for years and it’s the industry standard. It’s used in studios all around the world. At around £600 it’s a bigger investment than the Rode.
Testing the Saxophone Microphones
I want to hear what each of the microphones sound like when I play the saxophone softly, loudly, and both high and low. I’m using a backing track from Elite Backing Tracks.
For this test I’m not using any effects of reverb on the sound of my saxophone. The mics are going through a Universal Apollo Audio Twin Audio Interface, and recording with Logic Pro.

My Verdict
I think the Rode sounds fantastic, and it’s a great value microphone for your saxophone. The sound is quite bright which is good for commercial saxophone, but might not be what you want for jazz, for example.
The sound from the AKG, is clearer with more body. It really makes me think about the way I play my sax.
If you’er looking for an inexpensive studio mic for saxophone, the Rode is a great choice. When you’re looking to upgrade, I’d recommend the AKG.
