What ever level you are at with improvising on saxophone, it’s always great to find new tactics.
This week in Sax School we had an exclusive session about improvising on saxophone with one of the leading jazz educators in the USA, Roxy Coss.
Roxy Coss is a teacher at the Julliard School in New York and an award-winning saxophone player. Roxy has done a few guest sessions for Sax School and they are always really valuable.
In this session, Roxy shared her 4-Step Improvising System. It’s a really clear system that you can use when you are improvising over a jazz standard or any tune. Even if you’re a brand new beginner, with no knowledge of music theory, this is a system that will help you.
Improvising on Saxophone
Roxy digs into this system starting by looking at:
- Melody
- Form
- Finding the anchor notes or chord tones.
Roxy explains how to use these to build great solos, through finding an approach that works for you.
We had a bunch of our Sax School members who joined this session live and had real “breakthrough moments” in their understanding of improvising on saxophone.
